Abstract

Spinal osteosarcoma is a relatively rare primary spinal tumor and, historically, has been associated with an exceptionally poor prognosis. The authors report a successful experience of aggressive intralesional resection through the modified posterolateral transpedicular approach and postoperative adjuvant chemo-radio-therapy for a patient with a primary osteosarcoma of the thoracic spine. The patient remains disease-free and neurologically intact for more than 18 months after surgery. There are numerous treatment options for spinal osteosarcoma, the authors suggest that aggressive intralesional resection with chemo- radio-therapy could be a viable treatment option for this rare but life-threatening spinal tumor.
